Hitachi Adopts Image Backup Software “ShadowProtect” as Migration Tool for Hitachi Server Virtualization Platform “Virtage”

Asgent, Inc. (President & CEO: Takahiro Sugimoto, located in Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo), a pioneer in network security and operations management solutions, announces the adoption of image-based system backup software “ShadowProtect” by Hitachi, Ltd. as a system migration tool for the “Virtage (*1) Virtual Environment Migration Service” provided with “BladeSymphony”, Hitachi’s integrated service platform.

ShadowProtect is an image-based backup software solution that creates a backup of the entire system, including the OS, applications, data etc. It is possible to restore backup data to dissimilar hardware using HIR (*2) functionality, as well as migrate from a physical server to a virtual server (P2V) and from a virtual server to a physical server (V2P).
   With the increasing need for server virtualization, Hitachi has adopted “ShadowProtect IT Edition” for the “Virtage Virtual Environment Migration Service” to migrate disk images of existing Hitachi production systems to the Virtage LPAR (*3) environment.
   Hitachi made the decision to adopt ShadowProtect not only for HIR technology, but also because ShadowProtect supports a wide range of devices and for its highly-reputed rapid backup and recovery speed. Due to these abilities, the OS and software operating on top of the OS in x86/x64 physical server environments, including third party vendor servers, can be migrated to the Virtage LPAR environment and the time required to migrate software when deploying new systems can be cut by more than 80% (*4).
   Hitachi plans to further upgrade and expand this service in the future.

*1 Hitachi server virtualization platform. Firmware is implemented on the platform and virtualization commands are executed using an OS independent hypervisor formulation.
