Realizing NAT Traversal without SIP Client or Firewall Restrictions

Asgent, Inc. The SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) protocol is now the default standard for IP telephony. However, while existing firewalls change the IP address in the IP header for NAT traversal, for SIP communication the IP address is also denoted in the data payload, meaning the IP address cannot be changed and NAT traversal cannot be performed. In order to resolve this problem, $B!H(BNear End NAT Traversal$B!I(B and $B!H(BFar End NAT Traversal$B!I(B have traditionally been used for SIP.

However, these both have their own problems, as noted below.

Near End NAT Traversal

• Each remote site gateway requires a Near End NAT Traversal device which results in very high implementation costs.
• The rules of each firewall need to be changed.

Far End NAT Traversal

• Multiple SIP terminals under the NAT device are unable to register in the SIP server (only 1 SIP terminal can register), so is not effective for corporate use.

With these concerns in mind, Asgent announces the start of sales of the $B!H(BApostra$B!G(B Tunneling Server$B!I(B. The $B!H(BApostra$B!G(B Tunneling Server$B!I(B performs NAT traversal for all SIP terminals in the LAN by ensuring that the client software $B!H(BApostra$B!G(B Site Client$B!I(B installed on the LAN can connect to the $B!H(BApostra$B!G(B& Tunneling Server$B!I(B periodically.

Therefore, the appliance is not reliant upon commercial firewalls (FireWall-1, NetScreen etc.), broadband routers and so on. Also, if the $B!H(BApostra$B!G(B Site Client$B!I(B is deployed beneath the NAT device, there is no need to install the Site Client on each client machine (SIP terminal), and SIP communication can be performed by multiple SIP terminals without any changes. This removes the need for any large-scale changes in network configuration and allows SIP communication at low cost. Asgent plans to sell the $B!H(BApostra$B!G(B Tunneling Server$B!I(B across the Asia-Pacific region including Japan.
